The internet started booming around the late 90's and early 2000's, and with this massive surge in demand for new websites, the web development niche grew on an exponential level... but that was 2 decades ago. Now, the general term 'web development' has a broader meaning and has been categorized into many specializations. Namely - front-end, back-end and dev ops development. Jobs among these 3 categories are plenty and considered some of the highest paying in the world. Although, in less developed countries, the web development scene has a major drawback - we are stuck in the past with power of modern technology. To understand this situation, we have to look at how the internet and thus web development has evolved over the last 2 decades.

## The Boom
Web development started gaining popularity around the world in the mid 2000's. More and more businesses noticed the importance and advantages of websites, and many new tech startups solely relied on the web to function. Meta - formerly known as Facebook is one such company from that era which comes to mind. Soon, web development turned from a niche to a serious and viable career option. 'Hobby developers' became paid employees and the small web development groups turned into massive online communities. This shift from totally physical platforms to now online platforms meant, there were suddenly countless developer jobs available and high demand for developers. 

## More jobs = more better?
The demand for development related jobs was so high that within less than a decade, web development went from unrecognized to one of the highest in demand. This, of course was good news for developers, especially after the 2008 great recession. Many people who lost their jobs started to move to the software development sector, and fresh graduates looking for jobs had a new opportunity. More jobs are better than less jobs... until, there are too many jobs. Around the early 2010's when people started to widely adopt smart phones in their everyday life, tech companies knew they had to cater to the mobile audience to stay relevant. This meant 2 things - mega corporations scrambled to build new software and new startups started popping up *fast*. With more and larger tech companies came more and more jobs. So many jobs in fact that they were running out of people. However, that was only the case in the developed western countries, especially in North America. The whole rest of the under-developed and developing world couldn't even conceive a job market like this. So why was that the case? 

## Stuck in the past
Turns out that 5 of top 10 largest tech companies in the world, to this day, is located in USA. This excludes the mega corporation 'Amazon' which is listed in the retailing sector but arguable is the largest tech company out there. Amazon alone made a revenue of upwards of **$386,000,000,000** in the year 2021. For context, that is 386 **billion** dollars - with 9 zeros. All this means that USA, a country with a population of **330 million** has the majority of the developer jobs in the world. On the contrary, due to the lack of infrastructure, lower income and minimal access to technology, developing countries weren't able to capitalize on web platforms and were left with a lackluster developer job market, if any at all. On one hand, large tech corporations in developed countries keeps creating more and more jobs, thus increasing demand and salary. And on the other hand, developing countries, due to low demand, can't offer high paying jobs, deterring people from learning development which in turn affects the pay even more. This cycle of ever-increasing demand in some parts of the world and the lack thereof in others seems to be, in my opinion, one of the biggest problems with the web development scene currently.

## The light at the end of the tunnel
However, there is hope. The high demand and low supply of developers in developed countries has driven small business and even large ones in some ways to outsource work from independent contractors - also known as freelancers. Freelancing is a term that means working as an independent company, but in recent years, people from many developing countries, especially in south asia refers to it as the practice of selling services on **online marketplaces**. Although not an ideal solution, it is better than nothing and for many people this is the light at the end of the tunnel.

## Conclusion
As with all things, I am skeptical of the effectiveness of freelancing on solving the underlying problem of economic disparities between different parts of the world, but I also do think that this could be a step towards the right direction. Hope you liked the article.
